Pursuing Personal Injury Lawsuits against Politicians and Celebrities

Q: What happens if a politician or celebrity causes an accident that results in a personal injury to someone else?

Politicians and celebrities are people just like you and me. They put their pants on one leg at a time. They just happen to be well-known or famous and are often more wealthy than the rest of society. So while it may be a bit intimidating to be involved in an accident with one of them, they are not above the law; they may be sued and held accountable for damages resulting from the injuries they caused.

The former mayor of New York City, David Dinkins, is the subject of a recent personal injury lawsuit resulting from allegations that the car he was driving collided with a man riding a bicycle in Manhattan. The cyclist sustained a broken ankle. Dinkins, whose wife was a passenger at the time, reportedly kept driving and did not realize he’d been involved in any accident until someone came up to his car several blocks later to inform him. Reportedly he still continued on, pledging to return to the scene and cooperate with the police (and apparently did so) as soon as he transported his wife to the emergency room of a nearby hospital.

Dinkins was the first (and to date only) African-American Mayor of New York City and he served from 1990-1993. History buffs and those of a certain age may remember what is arguably his most famous quote, made in response to inquiries about his failure to timely file tax returns for a four-year period in the late 1960s and early 1970s: “I haven't committed a crime. What I did was fail to comply with the law.”  He explained it was not an issue of tax evasion, but rather one of merely neglecting or forgetting to file. It remains to be seen how this recent personal injury suit will be resolved.

Bicycle accidents—and celebrities-- are common in major metropolitan cities like New York and the resulting injuries to cyclists hit by cars can often be catastrophic. If you’ve been injured in a motor vehicle accident, or any other accident, as a result of the negligent, reckless or intentional acts of another person, you may be entitled to much more than what an insurance company will offer you in a fast settlement. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to recover damages for medical bills, anticipated future medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
