When an Ambulance is a Weapon

When people think of a personal injury lawsuit, they may think of any number of situations-- like a car accident or a slip, trip, and fall accident-- where an ambulance arrived and Emergency Medical Technicians (“EMTs”) saved the victim’s life. Certainly no one thinks of an ambulance as an instrument of death. But it can be.

People don't often realize how dangerous being an EMT can be in a busy city like the Bronx, New York.

Two female EMTs on their way to assist a pregnant woman could never have expected how that seemingly routine call would end so wrong.

Reportedly, after being alerted that a man was riding on the back bumper of the ambulance, the driver pulled over to investigate. At the moment she exited, the man jumped into the driver seat while the door was still open. The driver and her partner EMT who was sitting in the passenger seat tried to force the man out of the ambulance. According to witnesses, the man reportedly threw the ambulance into reverse, knocking the EMT driver to the ground and under the wheels. Then he ran over her body.

With the woman pinned underneath, he then allegedly drove the stolen ambulance forward into traffic ultimately crashing into some parked cars. Bystanders captured the graphic scene on video and helped police subdue the man. The 44 year-old EMT and mother of five was pronounced dead at the hospital. The 25 year-old man, who reportedly has 31 prior arrests with 21of them being sealed, was charged with "murder, grand larceny, and operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs".

When you are injured in a car accident or any kind of accident as a result of the negligent, reckless, or intentional actions of another, you may be entitled to recover financial damages in personal injury action. Damages usually include medical expenses related to the accident, future medical expenses, property damages, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.

If the victim dies from their injuries, close surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for their losses in a wrongful death lawsuit. Such damages may include victim’s final medical and funeral expenses, loss of income/support from the victim, and more, depending on the circumstances of each case.
