No One Stops After Man is Run Over Multiple Times in the Bronx

Q: Who is at fault if multiple drivers hit a pedestrian?

A hit-and-run automobile accident literally adds insult to injury. It is bad enough when a driver’s reckless, negligent, or intentional actions or inactions cause personal injury or wrongful death to someone else, but failing to stop and render aid or call for help makes the situation worse for both the driver and the victim.

It's even harder to imagine multiple vehicles following suit, striking the same victim and also driving away. But that's what happened to one unfortunate man in Bronx, New York.

In a horrific trucking accident in the predawn hours on the Cross Bronx Expressway, a pedestrian believed to have been walking along the north bound side of the CBE was struck by a tractor trailer. The tractor-trailer then struck the center barrier and immediately fled the scene. After the impact, multiple other vehicles struck the man-- and kept driving as well. The victim whose body was reportedly so mangled that investigators were unable to determine with certainty how many vehicles actually ran over him was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders.

The investigation and attempts to find the responsible truck driver as well-- as the other drivers involved in the fatal hit-and-run-- is ongoing. Such investigations often involve review of video footage as well as eyewitness testimony and anonymous tips.

Because of a big rig’s excessive size and weight, shifting cargo, and other factors that make them dangers on the roadways, truck owners and drivers are subject to extra regulations designed to minimize accidents and optimize safety. Drivers are screened, and limited in how many hours they may work or miles they may travel without adequate sleep and rest. Trucks are subjected to stringent safety inspections as well.

An experienced personal injury attorney can help victims and their survivors obtain financial compensation for losses including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, property damage, and more depending on the particular facts of each case. Even when the victim of a hit and run where the driver is never found, victims may still be able to receive compensation through their own insurance company or the NYS Office of Victim Services--again depending on their particular situation.
