Manhattan Mayhem as Wrong-Way Driver Mows Down Bicyclist

Q: Do reckless actions give rise to personal injury lawsuits?

Sometimes a car driving recklessly through a parking garage and emerging onto a busy city street happens on a movie set. Other times it's actually reality in New York City where unpredictable auto accidents are part of daily life.

Only a few blocks away from the recent horror of a sidewalk driver terrorizing pedestrians in Times Square-- and killing one young female in the mayhem of those moments-- the Penn Station area of Manhattan had a scare of its own.

Witnesses described a wrong-way driver "recklessly" emerging from a parking garage and speeding off in an attempt to out-run the police in pursuit. The driver reportedly hit and seriously injured a bicyclist, failed to stop, and continued to drive through and hit other cars still going in the wrong direction.

The driver was eventually apprehended by police after abandoning the car and running off. The windshield was shattered from what witnesses claim was the force of the airborne bicyclist’s body landing there upon impact. Witnesses also reported that the bicyclist-- who was not speaking – –was seriously injured, bleeding profusely from the back of his head, and appeared to have broken his arms and possibly his back.

If you are injured by the negligence or reckless actions of someone else, you may be entitled to damages in a personal injury lawsuit. If you are able to prove the other person was liable for your injuries, you may be entitled to compensatory damages including current and future medical bills, current and future lost wages, property damage, pain and suffering, and more depending on the facts of your case.

Further, if your loved one was the victim and died from their injuries, you may be entitled to damages in a wrongful death action, depending on your relationship to the deceased victim. Damages often include the costs of the victim’s final medical bills, the burial expenses, and may include loss of income/financial support, loss of companionship, and more—again depending on the facts of each case and the relationship to the victim.
