From Fairy Tale to Shakespearean Tragedy on New York City Parkway Crash

Sadly, not everybody gets to live happily ever after.

It was only hours after a couple tied the knot that one of their wedding guests who was driving home reportedly caused a horrific four-car automobile accident in Queens that left two of his passengers dead and seven people injured.

The alleged drunk driver was reportedly traveling westbound in the right lane on the Grand Central Parkway with an SUV full of passengers when he lost control after sideswiping a car and traveled across three lanes of traffic, hitting another SUV. Both SUVs crashed through the metal center divider-- twisting it like a can opener-- and rolled over before landing on the eastbound side of the parkway. A large section of the center divider was ripped open like a can opener by the force of the two SUVs slamming through it. A 16-year-old boy and 34-year-old man, both passengers in the allegedly drunk driver’s SUV were killed.

In addition to allegedly being alcohol-related, speed may also have been a factor in the crash according to investigators who estimate the SUV “was traveling at a minimum speed of 76 mph in a 50 mph speed zone before the crash". The driver reportedly faces charges of "manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, aggravated vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving".

One of the fatalities was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. The other had to be extricated from the wreckage and died later at the hospital. Several other passengers from the multi-vehicle crash sustained serious personal injury.

If someone's actions or inactions negligently, intentionally, or recklessly cause serious personal injury to someone else, the victim is entitled to compensation through a personal injury lawsuit. If the victim can prove the defendant was liable, compensatory damages for medical expenses, future medical expenses, lost income, property damage, pain and suffering, and more may be recovered.

If the accident victim dies from their injuries, their close surviving family members may be entitled to commence a wrongful death action against the driver to recover damages that may include the victim’s final medical expenses and burial costs, loss of financial support from the victim, loss of companionship, and more depending on the relationship to the victim and the circumstances of the case.
