Cop Seriously Injured in New Year’s Day Crash

Cop Seriously Injured in New Year’s Day Crash

While New York City police brutality lawsuits often make headlines, there are far more heroic cops than problematic ones. And there are many times when police officers are victims of circumstance or crime--just like regular civilians.

An example would be when they become victims of a car accident and find they need a skilled New York personal injury attorney to fight for compensation for their injuries.

New Year's Eve has always been known as one of the most dangerous nights on the roads due to the increased number of impaired drivers out celebrating.

Less than three hours into the New Year, one police officer on DWI patrol was seriously injured when a large pick-up truck allegedly crashed head-on into his patrol car. According to investigators, the alleged drunk driver of the truck "crossed over the double yellow line" and caused the crash which trapped the officer in the vehicle, requiring a 45-minute extrication effort.

The truck driver reportedly had only a broken ankle while the police officer who is expected to survive, suffered from the following serious injuries:

  • swelling and bleeding on the brain
  • broken neck
  • broken arm
  • broken leg
  • cracked rib
  • lung contusion
  • facial injuries and lost teeth

The truck driver, who reportedly has a prior DWI from 2015, is expected to be charged with "second degree vehicular assault, second degree assault, and driving while intoxicated".

When a person is injured in an accident as a result of the negligent, reckless, or intentional actions or inactions of another person or entity, they may be entitled to compensatory damages in a personal injury lawsuit.

Once liability has been established, damages may include such items as current and future medical expenses, current and future lost earnings, property damage, pain and suffering, and even punitive damages, depending on the facts and circumstances of each case. Whether criminal charges are filed or not in connection with the incident that resulted in the injuries has no impact on the ability to bring a civil lawsuit for monetary damages.
