Teen Pushed Off Bridge by Friend Suffers Personal Injuries

Q: If I am pushed and injured, can I sue the person who shoved me?

It was a picturesque scene in a Washington State Park where a bridge three stories tall towered above a river tempted some teenage girls to climb up and step onto the ledge. It was also a personal injury lawsuit waiting to happen.

While swimming in the river is not prohibited at this park, jumping from the bridge is-- presumably due to its massive height and the varying depths of the river channel below which is surrounded by rocky terrain. A sign warns visitors not to jump from the bridge. There are no lifeguards at the park, so swimming is at your own risk.

The 16-year-old girl with apparently cold feet was reportedly verbally expressing her change of heart and the decision NOT to jump from the bridge after all, when her “friend” allegedly pushed her off the bridge. She appeared to plummet face-forward toward the river below in a 9-second video clip of the alleged incident that went viral on social media.

The teen was lucky not to have been paralyzed or killed as a result of the incident, according to authorities. She did however reportedly suffer very serious injuries and was hospitalized for "five cracked ribs, a bruised esophagus and injuries to her trachea, as well as air trapped in the lining of her lungs". She was rescued by a man who immediately swam out to her after seeing her fall.

This wasn’t the more common scenario of a slip trip and fall case which generally happens when someone is hurt on someone else’s premises due to a dangerous condition that the property owner knew about but did not correct or warn visitors about. This was possibly an intentional push with a resulting free fall and injuries.

A personal injury action may be appropriate when someone suffers serious injuries as a result of the negligent, reckless, or intentional actions or inactions of somebody else. If the victim can prove liability, they may be entitled to compensatory damages for their physical and psychological pain, as well as financial losses like medical expenses and lost income or diminished earning capacity.

If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of the actions of somebody else, the personal injury experts at the Goldstein Law Firm can help you maximize the compensation to which you may be entitled. Contact the office today for a free consultation.
