What Are the Most Common Motorcycle Accident Injuries?

The motorcycle riding experience can easily hook the right person. The feel of riding a motorcycle is something that other vehicles on the road miss out on entirely. It is a sense of freedom. It is a thrill that is lacking in so many other forms of transportation. With freedom, however, comes certain dangers that are unique to motorcycles. By their very nature, motorcycles leave riders exposed. While car occupants may not get the thrill of the road, they do get the protection of seatbelts, an enclosed space, and other safety features such as airbags.

Who are the Most Common Motorcycle Accident Injuries?

The nature of a motorcycle means that there are certain injuries that are pervasive in accidents that involve motorcycles. For instance, head injuries and traumatic brain injuries are particularly prevalent in motorcycle accidents. With such exposure to any number of impacts, such as with another vehicle or the road, a motorcyclist can all too easily experience trauma to the head leading to devastating consequences. Helmets can go a long way in helping protect riders from head injuries but the protection is not, of course, all-encompassing. It is still possible for motorcyclists to sustain a head injury while wearing a helmet. Helmet wearing, however, is highly encouraged to help reduce the odds of this happening as well as reducing the severity of a head injury should one be incurred.

Another common motorcycle accident injury and one that is very much concentrated on those who ride motorcycles, as opposed to occupants of other motorized vehicles, is road rash. Road rash is a serious skin abrasion caused by the friction of skin impacting with the roadway. Road rash can be rather serious and, if not properly treated, can become easily infected. Motorcyclists are encouraged to seek immediate medical treatment for road rash to prevent this from happening. Furthermore, motorcyclists should wear full coverage, durable clothing when riding to help prevent road rash in the event of an accident.

Bone fractures are also quite common in motorcycle accidents. Arm and wrist fractures can often occur should a motorcycle tip in an accident. In these cases, the rider may have extended an arm in a reflex move trying to cushion the fall. Lower extremity fractures are also quite common. Should a bike fall on top of a rider due to it tipping over in an accident, the result could be a fracture to the hip, leg, or ankle.

In addition to the above, motorcyclists are vulnerable to injuries to the back and the neck. It is also common for motorcycle riders to experience sprains and strains as a result of involvement in an accident.
