What Should I Bring with Me for My First Meeting with a Personal Injury Lawyer?

If you have scheduled the first meeting with a personal injury attorney, you have taken a significant step towards protecting your legal rights to compensation. You have also taken a big step towards lightening the weighty load that is often carried by injury victims after an accident. Although it may be stressful to think about meeting with a lawyer, remember that the lawyer is there to help relieve you of much of the pressure you may be under, not add to it. Additionally, to help relieve some anxiety you may be feeling about meeting with a lawyer, preparing for the initial meeting can help focus this nervous energy into more productive efforts.

What Should I Bring with Me for My First Meeting with a Personal Injury Lawyer?

There is a substantial amount of paperwork that runs through a personal injury case. While we discuss what you should bring with you to your first meeting with a personal injury attorney, if some of this documentation is unavailable to you currently, do not stress about it too much. Your attorney’s office will be working on gathering the necessary documentation as well.

As you go to your initial attorney meeting, be prepared to determine whether or not the attorney will be a good fit for you. Do you feel comfortable with the attorney? Do you feel confident in his or her abilities to protect your best interests? Personal injury cases can involve a great deal of sensitive information, including medical information. If you do not feel comfortable disclosing such information to your attorney, you risk jeopardizing the case. This is one of the biggest reasons you need to pick the attorney right for you, the one you feel most comfortable with.

To prepare for your initial lawyer meeting, gather as much documentation about the accident as possible. Do you have pictures from the scene? Bring them. Do you have a copy of the police report? Bring that as well? Did you get the names and contact information of any witnesses to the accident? Notify your attorney of this.

You will also want to provide your attorney with the necessary insurance coverage information. This will likely include your insurance card and a copy of your insurance policy. You should also provide the insurance information for the person who caused the accident. If any of the insurance companies have been in contact with you, let the attorney know and provide them with any correspondence you have received from them.

As your accident injuries will play a central role in your personal injury case, it can be important to bring any medical records you have obtained through the course of your medical treatment for the injuries you sustained in the accident. This can include records and bills from emergency room visits, doctor’s appointments, and visits to specialists and physical therapists. These records will support your injury claim by showing how you were injured, the extent of your injuries, and the treatment you have needed and will continue to need to properly address your injuries.

Financial records can also play a significant role in a personal injury claim. Consider bringing documentation as to the financial impacts the accident has had on you. Did you have to miss work? Did you miss out on wages because you had to miss work? Bring supporting documentation for this such as payroll forms or your W2s.
